Recent researchers have discovered the presence of highly fertile, deep, black soils in areas of the Amazonian basin that had been cultivated by pre-Columbian Indians.They have been given the name "Terra Preta" further study has shown that these soils contain large quantities of biochar, which is still present thousands of years after it was added to the soil.
